Descansos: In New Mexico
Weird Travel: Exploring with Ben Osto
We've been enamored by Mexican religious art ever since we saw Jorworksy's Santa Sangre, and this love has grown as we came across countless Milagros, Retablos (Alfredo Vilchis Roque), Bultos, (Luis Tapia, Arthur Lopez) Ex-Votives , and Decansos on our journeys throughout the Southwest and Central America.

Decansos, or roadside memorials, are an increasingly familiar sight in America. They not only remind us of those who've died, but also to watch the road and stay below .08%.

In New Mexico, they are everywhere, and they're very elaborate. Here are photos of some of the souls I passed on the road...

Originally, we planned to post the details of these people's lives, but it's been done well already (click here). There are groups that keep detailed records of these memorials before they're removed, since different cities have different rules about how long they can remain standing, and some places allow memorials only for vicitims of DWI's.
