This cemetery has some of the most elaborate and beautifully crafted granite memorial work I've ever seen, perhaps because Barre is the "Granite Capital of the World." What sets Hope above the classic Old World cemeteries such Pere Lachaise in Paris is the modern novelty stones. Take a tour through this photo series and you'll see what I mean.
A man who died in a snowmobile accident is buried beneath a granite racecar, a vehicle I can only assume he had better luck at controlling. The tombstone for Louis Brusa, one of the stone-carvers who created many of the fantastic pieces in Hope Cemetery, pictures him dying from silicosis, or "White Lung"-- a disease caused by the long-term effects of inhaling stone particles. The grave of another talented carver, Eli Corti, is cut from one huge piece of granite. He died at the age of 34 when he was shot in the stomach during an argument between a group of socialists and a group of anarchists. I'm not privy to the specifics of the argument, but history shows that these scuffles are usually started over a disagreement about where to grab brunch. |
