This Month: Mysterious Ways
Whether you’re devoted to God, a smirking know-it-all, or—like most of us—in a pleasant state of confusion about your beliefs, you've gotta admit: religion is cool. It’s yielded some of the greatest artworks and bloodiest wars. Two of my favorites religious groups are in the US; these seem very exotic to this Polish Catholic. The first are the parable-driven Baptists of the nation’s South (who have created great works such as W.C. Rice’s warning signs), and the second are the icon- and votive-rich Spanish Catholics to the West (who produced New Mexico’s Bultos of the bearded female St. Uncumber, the "Strong Virgin," being crucified). This is beautifully strange stuff. Here are two of the most unusual examples of this split in the church.
