The Myrtles Plantation, St. Francisville, LA:
Photos and Text by Ben Osto
The Myrtles Plantation is billed as the most haunted place in America. I have to admit I was taken aback when I called to make a reservation, wise-assedly asking for a room with a “ghooooost,” and the receptionist quickly responded, “You want the Fannie Williamson room.”

I was pooped when we got there. My wife had trouble opening the door, saying it felt like someone was holding it shut. I had driven a long way to get there and was very happy to plop my body onto the bed and close my eyes. The bed started to shake violently and the chandelier started swaying back and forth. It’s amazing how hard it is for a ghost to scare you when you’re exhausted. It didn’t happen just once, but almost every time I lay down. When my wife joined me, it always stopped.

All the guests who are staying at the plantation met up for an evening tour in which we were told the spooky history of the place. The group was encouraged to take pictures of a mirror and look at the photos to find ghosts. I kept my trap shut about the fact that dirt on mirror plus flash on camera equals “ghoooosts!”

Later, the host asked the guests which rooms they were occupying and then gave a description of the room’s former occupants. Since I requested the most haunted room, I wasn’t surprised to hear her say that our place was the epicenter of the spiritual activity and that the bed sometimes shakes violently. The other guests gasped when I said she was right. I went on to say, “And I didn’t even have to put a quarter in it.” Okay, so I ruined the spooky mood. I was possessed by sarcasm.
